| A Brief History of Body Piercing
The piercing of the Glans of the Penis for the insertion of jewelry is a very ancient practice, the Apadravya piercing is mentioned in the Kama Sutra (700AD) and the Palang piercing has been practised in SE Asia for several hundred years. Several genital piercings originate in Asia where piercing has been practised since antiquity, the following quote, from "The Kama Sutra" describes the process for the piercing of an Apadravya, or a vertical barbell through the glans of the Penis.
"The people of the southern countries think that true sexual pleasure cannot be obtained without perforating the Lingam, and they therefore cause it to be pierced like the lobes of the ears of an infant pierced for earrings."
The Palang (often incorrectly called Ampallang) is a piercing that occurred among the Kayan, Kenyah, Kelabit, Dayak, and Iban tribes of Sarawak on the Island of Borneo. It involves piercing the Glans of the Penis horizontally, and the insertion of a barbell. The term "Palang" translates as "Crossbar" in Iban and can be related to the timber roof supports of the longhouses of the tribes of the area, and symbolises the protective power of the male over the family.
"the operation is performed only on adults. The skin is forced back, the penis is placed between two small planks of bamboo and for ten days and it is covered with rags dipped in cold water. Then the glans is perforated with a sharp bamboo needle; a feather dipped in oil, is placed in the wound until it heals. Wet compresses are used all the while. When the Dayaks travel and work they carry a feather in this canal. As soon as they grow desirous, they pull the feather out and replace it with the
ampallang. The ampallang is a little rod of copper, silver or gold, four centimetres long and two millimetres thick. At one end of this rod is a round ball or pear-formed object made of metal; at the other end a second ball is placed as soon as the ampallang is affixed. The whole apparatus is, when ready, five centimetres long and five millimetres thick.... Von Graffin has seen one Dayak who had two ampallangs, one behind the other! The perforation was always horizontal and above the urethra.... The women of the Dayaks say the embrace without this ornament is like rice, but with it, it tastes like rice with salt. Mantegazza, Sexual Relations of Mankind
"The function of this device is, superficially, is to add to the sexual pleasure of the women by stimulating and extending the inner walls of the vagina. It is, in this, in my experience decidedly successful." Tom Harrisson, The Sarawak Museum Journal Vol
VII, December 1956.
PLACEMENT
The Palang piercing is a horizontal piercing done through or above the urethra, the Apadravya piercing is done vertically
through the Glans at an angle.
JEWELRY
These piercings are done using Surgical Steel Barbells, the internal diameter of the barbell is usually determined before the
piercing by measuring the place to pierced will the penis is flacid and then allowing 2-3 mm room for expansion of the penis
during erection.
HEALING
These piercing take a long time to heal because they go through a lot of tissue, and because they become aggravated by
movement during sex. The healing time is extended greatly if you are uncircumcised because the piercing can't breath if it's
inside the foreskin and the movement of the foreskin aggravates the wound. I believe that if you are uncircumcised it would be
better to get an Apadravya piercing because it sits more comfortably inside the foreskin. Because the Palang piercing is done
horizontally through the Glans it is constantly aggravated by the movement of the foreskin. Both piercings take from 4-6 months
to heal, and if you are uncircumcised the healing period can be up to 18 months.
DO's & DONT'S TO HEAL YOUR PALANG & APADRAVYA PIERCING
DO clean under the foreskin regularly if you are uncircumcised, at least twice a day when you shower, salt water baths
are also beneficial for healing. Dry under the foreskin with a clean tissue or piece of toilet paper.
DO drink a lot of water and try to refrain from excessive consumption of coffee, tea, and alcohol, because they make
your urine cloudy, making urination painful and hamper healing.
DO wear a condom during sex until the piercing is fully healed, even if you are in a monogamous relationship, the natural
flora of the vagina can cause the wound to become infected. You must use a lubricant on the inside and outside of the
condom, otherwise the condom puts pressure on the piercing, hampering the healing process and causing pain during
sex.
DO wait at least 2 weeks before having sex, and be very gentle during sex for the first month. Be very careful when
having sex that the jewelry doesn't get caught, be extremely careful when entering that you don't catch the
jewelry,
this can be extremely painful and delay the healing process. I have found that after excessive sex the piercing can become
quite sore, when this happens it's best to refrain from sex until the tenderness goes.
DO use lavender oil as a lubricant and healing agent so that the jewelry doesn't become tight and dry. A drop every
couple of days is sufficient, remove excess oil as it may lead to irritation
DON'T use any creams or lotions to heal the piercing as they don't allow air to get to the wound. Don't use Tea Tree
Oil, Methylated spirits, Dettol etc because they will be painful and hamper the healing process.
SEXUAL EFFECTIVENESS
I read all the literature and talked to everyone that had both piercings, but what finally decided me on the Apadravya was simply the fact that the whole reason for getting the piercing is to enhance your sex life and I believe that the
Apadravya is more sexually effective. The female genitals are aligned vertically and the Apadravya applies pressure directly to
the G -spot, whereas the Palang only rubs on the side of the vagina.
